It all started when I
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
new tires. My family had great experiences at discount tire in Denver, so I bought my Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season Pluses at the Boulder DT store and paid to have them install them. Fast forward 10 days, one of them is flat. I went to the Denver DT store and had them fix it. They told me there was excessive corrosion that had not been addressed when I bought my tires. So I had them wire wheel it off and reseal the bead. (
Bead leak count: 1, 10 days after DT mounted my tires)

Fast forward three more days, the other three tires are looking low. So I went to the Boulder DT and told them to remove he corrosion and reseal the beads. The salesman, Charlie, told me that if they were so badly corroded, that I’d need new rims and the proceeded to show me options for new rims. (Shady selling techniques count: 1) I said no, remove the corrosion and seal the beads. He said fine and they did it. ( Bead leak count: 4, 13 days after DT mounted my tires)

Fast forward to Tuesday 4/21. I had them mount my tires to new (used) rims and argued with them to get them to do it for $40 instead of $70. (Shady selling techniques count: 2) Charlie offered to swap out another customer’s winter tires for his summer tires and charge $40 labor. I talked to him and asked why he was charging me $70 and not $40 like the other customer. He gave me some bullshit about the other customer having purchased both sets of tires two years ago from him. So I gave him the rant about how I bought new tires from him for $700 7 weeks ago, my brother bought his tires from DT for $500 3 months ago, and my parents have been buying tires from DT for longer than 10 years. He finally said alright fine I’ll do it for $40. So he did it and I was pleased with the work done. To prove a point to myself, I called the Denver DT after dealing with Boulder DT and asked how much to swap four tires from one set of rims to another set. The man on the phone instantly quoted me $40. (Fast forward to tonight, I went to move my car for the first time since Tuesday and the front right tire was flat. I inspected it for punctured and found none. (Bead leak count: 5, 3 days after mounting my tires)

This is unacceptable. I will be marching in their store tomorrow morning, demanding my money back because they have lost my confidence in their competence. I’ll pay Big O to reseal my leaky bead and end my relationship with DT. Enough is enough.

Firestone in Boulder is equally incompetent, seeing as they mounted dry rotted tires on my girlfriend’s car.

I’ve had nothing but average DT experiences in eugene. No real complaints except leaving my tools and lock nut keys strewn around the trunk, and the trunk liner in disarray. On two cars, years apart. That said I’m not going back after the last experience.

i’ve used DT pretty exclusively, multiple location. They do a good job, biggest complaint is “oh we can get you started immediately, done in 30 minutes”, takes 2 hours. I just leave my car and wait for them to call now

Curious why you are having so much corrosion problems with your wheels. Any reasons given?

Are there any tuning shops in the area? It would be worth giving them a call and asking them if they mount/balance, or know of a reputable shop that does. What you may also find is that it’s much cheaper (though not in all cases).
I used to go to a specific tire shop for literally everything. They’re a really great shop, and do a great job, I have no complaints about them. I brought tires to get them mounted, and thats where I have my one and only beef. It cost me a ton of money to get the first set of tires mounted, and only because I brought them, I didn’t have them order me tires. They’re not a chain store (I have nothing but bad experiences with most chain repair shops about something very basic). I ate it and had them mount my tires for $40 a wheel, and I’m glad they did it, despite that cost because they were very honest and upfront about the quality of the wheels and issues that I’ll have with them (finish is corroding off, inside the rim and out), but again, that cost.
The shop I go to now for emergency work however does mount and balance for literally half the cost, and the mount/balance has always felt better on the car. I can bring my own tires, I can even have them order from Tire Rack (they get a discount because their race team is sponsored by Tire Rack), and it’s a win win every time. The other great part for me is that the head mechanic at the shop worked at a tire shop for 10 years, and will balance a wheel to within a single unit of measure on the balancer. I forget what the whole detailed explanation was, but a wheel was literally balanced as perfect as wheel balancing gets.
In short, search for a custom shop. If they can’t do it themselves, they can point you towards the place they use, and name drop when you go to whoever they suggest. Reputation is insanely important.

They said mag chloride. But they just wanted to sell me new wheels. So they tried to charge me a lot when I came with my own wheels

thanks to mag chloride, my scoobie winter rims look like hell. the surface corrosion is near circumferential on the outer wheel lip. still hold air though.

Mag chloride is what Colorado uses instead of salt. It corrodes all the things.

You’re probably better off going somewhere else. You’re not gonna ‘win’ with assholes like that. Just give them a bad review on Yelp and Google and go somewhere else.

If that is what I think, they tried it here on the mountain roads that get a lot of snow. Liquid, sprayed on, type of thing. Problem was it caused more accidents because the crews were not trained well in how to apply it and people would drive into it and slide like they were on ice.

It’s aweful stuff. I walked across some of it on a sidewalk one morning. By lunch the soles of my shoes cracked, and left a rubber chunk trail all over the office.

Mag chloride is a sticky spray used on dirt roads here to keep the dust down. It’s not used on snow. Gravel and sand are the only things Colorado users on snow...

Hmmmmm.. it seems I *may* have been incorrect... But as Fletch once said, “it takes a big man to admit when he’s wrong; and I am not a big man.”
